One Piece is going on a 2-week break and will not run in this year’s 28th and 29th issues of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, which will officially be released on June 9th and June 16th. The manga is expected to return in the 30th issue on June 23rd. The reason for the 2-week break is Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is undergoing an operation to remove his tonsils. Oda-sensei drew a sketch that says “Under Maintenance” with Luffy’s speech bubble containing the words “Sorry. Wait just a little bit!!”.
On the official website for the magazine, Oda-sensei writes, “Since last year, I’ve tended to get swollen tonsils when I get tired. The surgery I’m having this time will take out the tonsils, which really hindered my work.” He joked, “Since I’m having this surgery anyways, I plan to have a bazooka installed on my shoulder.” He added, “I’ll be back with my body stronger, so I can clear my workload in the latter half of this year. I’ll be right back, so please come play with me again.”
In the March of 2013, One Piece also went on a 2-week break when Oda-sensei was hospitalized for peritonsillar abscess, a complication due to an infection often caused by tonsillitis.
In a 2012 interview in Nikkan Sports Weekly One Piece Newspaper, One Piece manga creator Oda-sensei reported that he wakes up 5:00 a.m. in the morning and works until 2:00 a.m. after midnight, with his hours of sleep being between 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.
Let’s all wish the hard-working Oda-sensei a speedy recovery!
