Toei Animation had predicted One Piece Film Z would be seen by over 1 million people and earn more than 1.3 billion yen in it’s opening weekend and boy they were right!

1,140,081 people saw One Piece Film Z this weekend, giving it gross sales of 1,372,054,050 yen (1.372 billion yen, which is around $16 million USD)! That means after earning 750 million yen (around $9.0 million USD) on Saturday, December 15th, it made in excess another 622 million yen (around $7.0 million USD) on Sunday!

One Piece Film Z exceeded the previous 2012 record holder, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, for the highest opening weekend box office in Japan. It had sold 771,764 tickets for 1.13 billion yen (around $14 million USD) in gross sales.

Film Z also surpassed the previous top earner in the One Piece series, Strong World, which had an opening weekend gross of 1.038 billion yen (around $11.7 million USD).

Toei Animation expects One Piece Film Z to take in a huge 5 to 6 billion yen ($60 million to $70 million USD) at Japanese theaters when it’s all said and done!
